Barbara Beatley Anthony was born in 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts, to Grace Cobb (Radcliffe College class of 1929) and Bancroft Beatley, Harvard professor of education and later president of Simmons College. She lived in Belmont, Massachusetts, attended Shady Hill School in Cambridge and Radcliffe College (A.B. 1950).
